Prop firm payouts and tax in Canada

No CRA ruling on prop-firm payouts. Under general rules, an activity carried on for profit with evidence of that intention is a business, so payouts are normally self-employment business income reported on Form T2125. This scope is FEDERAL ONLY. Provinces/territories are not modelled.

Usually taxed as: business incomeNo specific ruling — general rules appliedTax year: calendar year (1 Jan – 31 Dec)

The Canada tax office has not ruled on prop-firm payouts specifically. The treatment below applies the general rules for this kind of income. Basis: CRA T4002: a business is 'an activity that you intend to carry on for profit and there is evidence to support that intention'; self-employed individuals report business or professional income on Form T2125.

  • Schedule 8 (CPP contributions on self-employment)

Registration, costs and currency

Registering
No separate income-tax registration for a sole proprietor. Income is reported on the personal T1 return with T2125. A GST/HST account is required once worldwide taxable supplies exceed $30,000 in a calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters (small-supplier rule). Source: canada.ca
Challenge fees and other costs
Deductible: likely. Expenses incurred to earn business income are deductible on T2125. No CRA statement on challenge/evaluation fees specifically. Refunds of fees reduce the expense or count as income.
Converting to CAD
Bank of Canada exchange rate in effect on the day the amount arises. If amounts are received at various times in the year, the Bank of Canada annual average rate may be used.
Forms the firm sends you
Foreign prop firms (CZ/US/UAE/UK) do not issue Canadian slips. US firms collect W-8BEN from Canadians and do not issue a 1099. A Canadian payer of fees for services may issue a T4A (box 048). The trader must self-report from their own records.
VAT / GST
GST/HST registration is required above the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Advisory, consulting or professional services supplied to a non-resident are zero-rated under Sch. VI Part V s.23. Whether a prop-firm 'trading service' falls under s.23 or another zero-rating provision is NOT confirmed. Source: canada.ca

What to watch out for

  • FEDERAL ONLY: provincial/territorial income tax (often 5–25%+) is not modelled. The UI must label the estimate as federal-only and never as total tax.
  • Quebec residents pay QPP rather than CPP and file with Revenu Québec. Not supported.
  • EI for self-employed is opt-in only and is not modelled.
  • Do not claim CRA has ruled on prop-firm payouts. Business vs other income is a facts-based test.
  • Do not claim GST/HST zero-rating is certain for this service.
  • CPP is not payable by people aged under 18, or over 70, or receiving CPP disability. Age-based exceptions are not modelled.

Not yet confirmed from an official source

We list these so you know exactly what to double-check.

  • Exact T2125 line numbers (gross business income 8299, total expenses 9368, net 9369) were not confirmed from an official page this session.
  • Schedule 8 PDF (robots-blocked) was not read. The CPP deduction/credit split is taken from the CRA 2023 enhancement news release, not from the form itself.
  • Which GST/HST zero-rating provision applies to prop-firm services.
