Prop firm payouts and tax in South Africa
There is no SARS guidance on prop-firm payouts. A tax resident is taxed on worldwide income, and fees or profit share from carrying on a trade are gross income. Because the income is not remuneration, the trader is a provisional taxpayer.
The South Africa tax office has not ruled on prop-firm payouts specifically. The treatment below applies the general rules for this kind of income. Basis: SARS: 'Any person who receives income (or to whom income accrues) other than remuneration, is a provisional taxpayer.'

Registration, costs and currency
- Registering
- Register as an income-tax taxpayer with SARS (eFiling). There is no separate registration step for provisional tax: anyone with non-remuneration income is a provisional taxpayer. Source: sars.gov.za
- Challenge fees and other costs
- Deductible: likely. General deduction formula (s11(a) Income Tax Act): expenditure incurred in the production of income in carrying on a trade, not of a capital nature. No SARS statement on challenge fees specifically.
- Converting to ZAR
- s25D: by default, the spot rate on the date of receipt or accrual. A natural person may elect the average exchange rate for the whole year of assessment, applied to all foreign-currency amounts that year (SARS Interpretation Note 63). SARS publishes average exchange rate tables.
- Forms the firm sends you
- Foreign prop firms issue no SARS certificates (IRP5/IT3). The trader self-reports.
- VAT / GST
- Compulsory VAT registration threshold rose from R1m to R2.3m of taxable supplies from 1 Apr 2026 (the SARS FAQ notes the amendment was still subject to promulgation). Zero-rating of services to non-residents (s11(2)(l) VAT Act) is not confirmed for this service. Sources: sars.gov.za ; sars.gov.za
What to watch out for
- Medical scheme fees tax credits, retirement-fund deductions and other credits are not modelled.
- Provisional tax underestimation penalties (20%) and late-payment penalties (10%) apply. They are not modelled.
- Do not claim SARS has ruled on prop-firm payouts.
- Exchange-control (SARB) rules on receiving foreign payments or crypto are out of scope.
